When I graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, San Diego, I was so excited to start practicing. With our 8 month old daughter in tow, my husband and I rented a camper and loaded up two dogs and a kitty, and headed back home to the East Coast.
I found a space to rent, and settled in. My passion for helping people with our medicine was contagious, yet I learned quickly that I knew next to nothing about business and running a successful practice.
I steadily built my practice through various marketing methods including introductions to local doctors, giving lectures, and attending lots of festivals and health fairs. My practice was growing, but I wasn't always able to pinpoint which of my marketing efforts paid off. This left me exhausted.
As my practice grew, the financial aspect of running a practice became more involved. Looking at my financials was just about my least favorite activity. I discovered that managing staff could really suck sometimes! In between seeing patients, marketing and running the business, I sometimes felt as if I was losing my mind.
I wondered if I had any clue what the heck I was doing. I didn't feel empowered.
I knew how to mix up an herbal formula for a patient and help infertility patients conceive. I knew how to put on a smiley face and market myself. I had patients coming in, but I lacked the confidence I needed to make strategic business decisions. I was winging it!
When I finally hired a business coach, he helped me to learn what my strengths and weakness are, and how to use these to grow my practice. He taught me to trust myself and my decisions in business. Most of all, my business coach held me accountable to my business. Through this coaching, my practice sales went up, along with my empowerment as a business owner.
I want to help you to learn these things the easy way.
Having a business mentor is something I wish I had done much, much sooner. Let me be yours.
